Gilia diegensis typically produces an erect, usually glandular stem that grows up to 40 centimeters (16 inches) tall. This plant forms a flat basal rosette of deeply cut, sharply lobed leaves, with each leaf reaching up to 7 centimeters in length. Smaller lance-shaped leaves with toothed edges grow along the stem. Its inflorescence is a cluster of flowers that have purple and yellow throats, white to lavender corolla lobes, and protruding stamens tipped with blue anthers.
