About Gibbaranea bituberculata (Walckenaer, 1802)

Gibbaranea bituberculata (Walckenaer, 1802) is a species of orbweavers that belongs to the family Araneidae and the subfamily Araneinae. This spider has a Palearctic distribution and occurs across most of Europe. Adult males of this species grow to 6โ€“8 millimetres (0.24โ€“0.31 in) in length, while adult females reach a length of 8โ€“10 millimetres (0.31โ€“0.39 in). These spiders can be found in sunny habitats on shrubs, habitat edges, and low plants, where they build their webs close to the ground. The basic body coloration of this species is highly variable, but individuals are usually brownish with whitish tones. Their cephalothorax, also called prosoma, is fairly broad and covered in prostrate hair. In females, the abdomen, also called opisthosoma, is large, spherical, and marked with two small indentations. Gibbaranea bituberculata has eight eyes total, with four relatively large eyes positioned in the center of the face. Its chelicerae are short, strong, and bear teeth along their inner edge. The legs are moderately long and quite powerful.
