About Geum reptans L.
Geum reptans, commonly called creeping avens, is a flowering plant species belonging to the genus Geum in the Rosaceae family. It is native to mountain regions of Central and Southeastern Europe. This species is a long-lived perennial that can reproduce both sexually and clonally. It displays high phenotypic variation, but this variation in traits does not appear to represent adaptation to local conditions. Geum reptans grows in rock cracks, on moraines, in moist scree fields, and on the tops of mountain summits. It is widespread across the Alps, where it most commonly occurs at elevations between 2,100 and 2,800 m (6,900โ9,200 ft). Its altitudinal range varies across different parts of the Alps: it grows from 1,900 to 2,500 m (6,200โ8,200 ft) in the Maritime Alps, and can be found as high as 3,800 m (12,500 ft) in the Graian Alps. It has a more restricted distribution outside the central Alps: it grows less extensively in Germany's Black Forest, in some regions of the Carpathians (specifically at 1440โ2540 m in the Tatras), in the Rila and Pirin mountains of Bulgaria at 2300โ2900 m, and in the Pindus, Korab, and Shar mountains of the Western Balkans.
