About Geum macrophyllum Willd.

Geum macrophyllum Willd., commonly called largeleaf avens or large-leaved avens, is a flowering plant. Its native range extends from the Arctic south to northern U.S. states, through the Rocky Mountains, west to the Sierra Nevada in California, and as far south as northwestern Mexico. This species is more distinctive in its fruiting stage than when it blooms: it produces spiky spherical clusters of reddish styles. Its fruits form a ball covered in tiny, velcro-like hooks that catch on passing clothing and animal hair. The Squamish people use the plant's leaves to prepare a diuretic tea. The Haida people use boiled roots to create a steam bath for treating rheumatic pain. Some other indigenous tribes use this plant for eyewashes, to treat stomach ailments, and to assist with childbirth.
