About Geum fragarioides (Michx.) Smedmark

Geum fragarioides (Michx.) Smedmark has previously been classified under the synonyms Waldsteinia fragarioides, Dalibarda fragarioides Michx. This species is commonly called Appalachian barren strawberry, or simply barren strawberry. It is a low, spreading evergreen plant that produces showy yellow flowers in early spring. In appearance, it is similar to other low-growing plants in the rose family, such as true strawberries (genus Fragaria) or Potentilla indica (Indian strawberry), but it differs by lacking runners and having more rounded leaves. It is native to eastern North America, where its range extends from Minnesota, Ontario, Quebec, and Maine south to Indiana and Pennsylvania; in mountainous areas, it grows as far south as North Carolina. It is commonly used as an underplanting in perennial gardens.
