The black-polled yellowthroat, scientifically named Geothlypis speciosa P.L.Sclater, 1859, measures 12.5 to 14 centimeters (4.9 to 5.5 inches) in length and weighs between 10 and 11.8 grams (0.35 to 0.42 ounces). Males have olive-colored upperparts, yellow underparts, and a distinct black mask, while females have duller overall plumage. This bird is endemic to central Mexico and the southwestern Mexican Plateau, found specifically in the states of Guanajuato, Michoacán, and México State. Its natural habitats are freshwater lakes and freshwater marshes. It is currently classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, and its main threat is habitat loss.
