About Geophis hoffmanni (Peters, 1859)

Geophis hoffmanni is a small species of snake. The holotype of G. hoffmanni measures 24.5 cm (9.6 in) in total length, including the tail, as originally recorded by W. Peters in 1859. Its dorsal scales are arranged in 15 rows along the entire length of its body. It has five or fewer upper labials, and its posterior chin shields are in contact with one another. Its ventral scales number between 114 and 131, while subcaudal scales number between 23 and 32. Adult individuals are uniformly dark brown or black across their dorsal surface, and white or cream-colored across their ventral surface. Juveniles have a paler nuchal collar. This snake species is found in Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. Its preferred natural habitat is forest, occurring at altitudes ranging from 18 m to 2,100 m (59 ft to 6,890 ft). It can also be found in disturbed areas including farms and gardens. G. hoffmanni reproduces via oviparity.
