About Gentiana calycosa Griseb.

The flowers of Gentiana calycosa Griseb. are funnel-shaped cups that open into a five-petaled face 3 to 5 centimeters (1.2 to 2.0 inches) wide, with colors ranging from deep blue to purple. This plant has hardy, thick green leaves growing on thin red stems that bear its flowers. It is native to mid-elevation mountains of the western United States and Canada, ranging from the Sierra Nevada of California to the Canadian Cascades. It grows in a variety of habitats, including rocky slopes, wet meadows, and seeps. Like other gentians, G. calycosa is an attractive mountain wildflower good for use in alpine gardens. It may be difficult to grow, and prefers moist rocky soils.
