About Geitoneura klugii Guérin-Méneville, 1830
Geitoneura klugii, commonly known as the common xenica or Klug's xenica, is a species of butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. This butterfly is native to southern Australia, and it is easily camouflaged due to its close resemblance to the ground where it typically flutters. Its wingspan reaches approximately 38 millimetres, or 1.5 inches. Both the upper and lower sides of its forewing are black, marked with brownish-black patterns, and feature a black spot with a white center. Its hindwing is orange, framed by a black border and a black-rimmed eyespot. The underside of the hindwing varies in color from grey to brown and has darker markings.
Geitoneura klugii occurs in temperate regions of southern Australia that receive more than 100 mm of rainfall annually. It typically inhabits cool, damp areas with access to green food sources. Its confirmed distribution covers southern Queensland, eastern New South Wales, most of Tasmania, most of Victoria, southern Western Australia, and coastal South Australia.
