About Gegenes pumilio (Hoffmannsegg, 1804)

Gegenes pumilio, commonly known as the pigmy skipper or dark Hottentot, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Hesperiidae. Its distribution ranges from the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea, through Anatolia, to the Himalaya, and it is found across the entire southern portion of Africa. The forewings of this species reach a length of approximately 14 mm. Adult Gegenes pumilio are active from April to October, producing multiple generations each year. The larvae of this butterfly feed on a variety of grasses, including species in the Gramineae group, as well as Pennisetum clandestinum, species in the genus Ehrharta (including Ehrharta erecta), and species in the genus Cynodon.
