Gayophytum diffusum is a species of flowering plant in the evening primrose family, commonly known as spreading groundsmoke. It is native to western North America, where it is a common component of many different habitat types. This is a spindly, branching annual herb that grows to a maximum height of about half a meter. Its thin stems bear sparse narrow leaves that are a few centimeters long. Flowers occur infrequently, are small in size, and are usually white. The fruit is a cylindrical, knobby capsule that can reach up to 1.5 centimeters in length.
