About Gaultheria antipoda G.Forst.
Gaultheria antipoda G.Forst. is an upright or spreading shrub that reaches 1–2 metres (3.3–6.6 ft) in height. Its leaves are 5–15 mm (0.20–0.59 in) long, with a leathery texture, shiny surface, and small serrations along the edges. This species flowers around November, and produces white to red berries in late summer and autumn. Unlike many other Gaultheria species that are gynodioecious, G. antipoda is hermaphroditic: all individuals produce both pollen and seeds. In distribution, this shrub occurs in the North Island between 37° and 39°30'S, where it grows in lowland to subalpine scrub habitats, especially on cliffs and rocky areas.
