About Gastrophysa cyanea Melsheimer, 1847

Gastrophysa cyanea, commonly called the green dock beetle (note that the European species Gastrophysa viridula is also sometimes referred to by this common name), is a species of leaf beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae. This species is found in North America. Adult G. cyanea measure 4 to 5 mm in length and have a metallic green coloration. Before they lay eggs, females can be easily identified by their swollen abdomens. The beetles emerge in spring and commonly feed on curly dock. Pinned preserved specimens of this species will sometimes turn metallic blue.
