About Gasteria carinata (Mill.) Duval
Gasteria carinata (Mill.) Duval is a highly variable succulent species. Most commonly, it produces sharp, triangular leaves that are mottled in color, with a channeled upper surface. Each leaf ends in a sharp point, and mature plants typically have a keel on each leaf. The tiny spots on the leaves are arranged in bands, which creates faint stripes on the foliage, a trait similar to that of Gasteria batesiana. This species is proliferous, meaning it readily produces new offsets and can form dense clumps over time. In its native range, Gasteria carinata grows across the southern part of the Western Cape Province, South Africa, specifically between Hermanus and Mossel Bay. It occurs in rocky habitats within Renosterveld and Fynbos vegetation types. Its closest relative is Gasteria acinacifolia, the large dune gasteria that grows to the east of its range.
