About Gasteracantha quadrispinosa O.Pickard-Cambridge, 1879
Female four-spined jewel spiders (Gasteracantha quadrispinosa) have a distinctive shape and coloration. Their abdomens are flat, oblong, and slightly curved forward, measuring 5 to 6 mm wide when spines are excluded. Short spines are located at each corner of the abdomen; the rear pair of spines is slightly longer than the front pair. Unlike most other species in its genus, G. quadrispinosa does not have a third pair of spines on the hind margin of the abdomen, which is why it has only four spines (a trait called quadrispinose). The hard, shiny upper surface of the abdomen ranges in color from red to yellow, and is patterned with a single black spot and dark sigilla.
