Gallotia stehlini (Schenkel, 1901)

Size

Gallotia stehlini, also called G. stehlini, can reach a total length of up to 80 cm (31 in) when including the tail. It is one of the largest reptile species that belongs to the family Lacertidae.

Coloration

This species displays a range of color variations in shades of gray, brown, and reddish.

Sexual Dimorphism

Compared to females, male G. stehlini have noticeably large jowls, more robust heads, and a higher overall body mass.

Distribution

This species is endemic to Gran Canaria, which is part of the Canary Islands of Spain, though it has also been introduced to the island of Fuerteventura.

Habitat and Altitude Range

Its natural habitats include temperate shrubland, Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation, rocky areas, rocky shores, and pastureland, and it occurs at altitudes ranging from sea level up to 1,850 m (6,070 ft).

Reproduction

G. stehlini reproduces by laying eggs, meaning it is oviparous.
