About Galium californicum Hook. & Arn.

Galium californicum Hook. & Arn. is a morphologically variable species. It can grow as a small perennial herb, or as a sprawling shrub with a woody base that reaches up to around 1 metre (3.3 ft) in height. Its stems and small oval-shaped leaves are covered in hairs. This species is dioecious: male plants produce small clusters of staminate flowers, while female plants produce solitary flowers. Both male and female flowers are typically dull yellow in color. The fruit this plant produces is a berry covered in soft hairs.
