Size and Weight
The blue-necked jacamar (Galbula cyanicollis Cassin, 1851) measures 19 to 22 cm (7.5 to 8.7 in) in length and weighs 21 to 26 g (0.74 to 0.92 oz).
Male Plumage
Male blue-necked jacamars have shiny green upper parts and chestnut underparts. Their face color shifts from steely blue in the east to green in the west across their range.
Female Plumage
Females are duller overall, and have tawny buff underparts.
General Distribution
The blue-necked jacamar is distributed east of the Andes and south of the Amazon River.
Detailed Range
Its range includes eastern Peru, far northern Bolivia, and Brazil, where it extends east to Maranhão and south to Rondônia and northern Mato Grosso.
Forest Habitat
This species inhabits the interior of terra firme and várzea forests, where it occurs in lower forest strata and is often found in small gaps. It also lives in gallery forest within Brazil's cerrado biome.
Elevation Range
It can be found at elevations up to 900 m (3,000 ft).
