Taxonomy and Naming
The white-eared jacamar (Galbalcyrhynchus leucotis Des Murs, 1845) measures 18 to 21 cm (7.1 to 8.3 in) long and weighs 44 to 50 g (1.6 to 1.8 oz).
Body and Bill Morphology
It has a stouter body and a more robust bill than many other jacamars.
Adult Plumage
Its plumage is almost entirely reddish-chestnut, with a bronzy gloss on the crown, wings, and tail, and it has distinct large white ear coverts.
Juvenile Traits
Juvenile white-eared jacamars are paler than adults and have shorter bills.
Geographic Distribution
The species is distributed in the upper Amazon basin, ranging from Meta Department in central Colombia south through eastern Ecuador to the Ucayali River in northeastern Peru, and east into western Brazil along the Solimões (Upper Amazon) River almost to Manaus.
Habitat Preferences
It inhabits humid terra firme and várzea forest, including both primary and secondary forest, and prefers edge habitats such as areas around clearings and along waterways.
Elevational Range
Its elevational range extends up to 500 m (1,600 ft).
