About Galanthus lagodechianus Kem.-Nath.
Galanthus lagodechianus Kem.-Nath. is a species of snowdrop belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. It is native to Armenia, Azerbaijan, east Georgia, and the Russian Federation regions of Kabardino-Balkaria and North Ossetia. This plant is a bulbous herbaceous perennial; its leaves grow to 10 cm (3.9 in), while its flowering stalk reaches 20 cm (7.9 in). Erect green leaves emerge in early spring, and are followed by a single, bell-shaped, pendent white inflorescence. The inner perianth segments bear a green inverted V-shaped marking. Galanthus lagodechianus prefers moist growing conditions in either full sun or partial shade. It was formally described by Georgian botanist Kemularia-Nathadze in 1947. Its specific epithet lagodechianus references the Lagodekhi nature reserve located in east Georgia. In the wild, this species grows at elevations between 1,800 and 2,400 m (5,900–7,900 ft) in mixed deciduous forests. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant, and is distinguished as the latest-flowering of all snowdrop species, often blooming at the end of February or the beginning of March.
