About Furnarius rufus (Gmelin, 1788)
The rufous hornero, scientific name Furnarius rufus (Gmelin, 1788), is a medium-sized ovenbird. Adults measure 18 to 20 centimetres (7–8 inches) in total length and weigh 31 to 58 grams (1.1–2.05 ounces), and males are heavier than females. This species has a slender, slightly decurved horn-coloured bill that is 2.5 centimetres (1.0 inch) long, a shape adapted for eating insects. Average wing length is 10.2 centimetres (4 inches), and males are generally larger in wing size. The tail of the rufous hornero is short, with an average length of 7.1 centimetres (2.8 inches). Measurements across the species can vary in line with Bergmann's rule. Male and female rufous horneros have similar plumage patterns. The species has a rufous-brown back and pale buffy brown underparts. Its wings are mostly pale brown, while the flight feathers are blackish and marked with cinnamon wingbars.
