Their leaves measure 3.5โ13 cm long by 0.8โ4 cm wide; they are typically arranged oppositely, and more rarely grow in groups of three. Leaves have an ovate to cordate shape, with a base that is rounded to cordate, and an apex that is acute to acuminate. Leaf petioles are 1.2โ8 cm long. Flowers are bisexual, axillary, and pendulous, growing in distal axils. Flower pedicels are 35โ75 mm long. The ovary is narrowly cylindrical. The floral tube measures 20โ64 mm long by 4โ9 mm wide, is cylindrical, and is laterally compressed at the base around the nectar. Sepals are 8โ20 mm long by 5โ8 mm wide, and lanceolate. Both the floral tube and sepals are pink to red. Petals measure 6โ12 mm long by 4โ8 mm wide, are green with a reddish base, are ovate, and have a subacuminate apex. The two sets of filaments measure 10โ20 mm and 6โ14 mm long respectively, and are greenish. Ripe berries are 20โ40 mm long by 5โ8 mm wide, elongated, and dark purplish. This species has a chromosome number of 2n = 22. Its natural distribution ranges from Mexico to Costa Rica.
