About Fuchsia procumbens R.Cunn.

Vegetative characteristics: The stems of Fuchsia procumbens R.Cunn. are slender, creeping, and weakly woody. They can climb to heights close to 1 m on small shrubs. The leaves are circular, measure 7–12 mm across, are arranged singly along the stem, have toothed (dentate) margins, and bear trichomes on their surface. Generative characteristics: The flowers are erect and radially symmetrical, with a yellow floral tube and no petals. Instead, they have four sepals that are colored orange and green. This species produces blue pollen, a distinctive feature of the Pacific Fuchsia clade. Pollen is produced by eight stamens. Habitat: Small populations of this species grow in coastal areas of New Zealand's North Island, where it grows in sand near tide lines. Reproduction: Fuchsia procumbens is trioecious (also referred to as subdioecious), meaning it produces hermaphrodite, male, and female individual plants. Both male and female plants have two distinct forms that differ in style length. Unisexual populations are thought to be able to persist thanks to vegetative reproduction via rooting along the creeping stems. Pollination and seed dispersal: Little is known about pollination and seed dispersal in Fuchsia procumbens. There has been speculation that lizards facilitate both pollination and seed dispersal, and there are existing reports of seed dispersal by invertebrates.
