About Fritillaria pyrenaica L.
Fritillaria pyrenaica is a species of flowering plant in the lily family, Liliaceae, native to the Pyrenees region spanning Spain and France. Its common names are Pyrenean fritillary and Pyrenean snake's-head. This bulbous perennial plant grows up to 45 cm (18 in) tall. It produces pendent, bell-shaped flowers in spring. The flowers have recurved tepals that are purple with brown and yellow tints. Like other species in the Fritillaria genus, especially F. meleagris, F. pyrenaica flowers have a distinct strong chequered pattern. When grown in cultivation in the United Kingdom, Fritillaria pyrenaica has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It will grow in any open location, including a flower border or meadow, when planted in full sun. Like all plants in the Liliaceae family, this species is vulnerable to predation by adult scarlet lily beetles and their larvae.
