Tenerife blue chaffinches resemble common chaffinches, but are noticeably larger with a thicker bill. Their plumage is characteristically more uniform, and they do not have a dark cap. Females are dull grey-brown, and can be told apart from common chaffinches by their weaker wing bars. Breeding males are easy to identify, with the largely blue plumage that gives the species its name, and a grey bill. This bird occurs only in the highlands of Tenerife. Its primary habitat is mountain forest of the Canary Island pine (Pinus canariensis). It is most common in coniferous forest areas with dense undergrowth, but can also be found in laurel woodland, pine woodland, tree-heath, and scrub. It prefers habitats at elevations between roughly 1,100–2,000 m (3,600–6,600 ft), but will descend to lower elevations during bad weather.
