About Fringilla canariensis Vieillot, 1817
The Canary Islands chaffinch, scientifically named Fringilla canariensis Vieillot, 1817, measures around 15 to 16 cm long, which is similar in size to the Eurasian chaffinch. It differs notably from the Eurasian chaffinch in the plumage of adult males: male Canary Islands chaffinches have a dark blue-grey mantle, a lighter pink face and breast, and a whiter belly and undertail. Like all other chaffinch species, the female Canary Islands chaffinch has duller brown plumage. Its bill is similar in size and shape to the bills of Eurasian and African chaffinches, and is not distinctly large like the bill of the related Azores chaffinch.
