About Fragaria orientalis Losinsk.
Fragaria orientalis Losinsk. is a tetraploid wild strawberry species. It is native to East Asia, specifically eastern Siberia, and is occasionally grown as a novelty edible crop. Its native range includes multiple Chinese provinces (Gansu, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Nei Mongol, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Shanxi), as well as Korea, Mongolia, and eastern Russia. This species grows in forests and meadows on mountain slopes, most often under the shade of forest trees, at elevations between 600 and 4000 meters. While cultivated as an edible herb, it remains relatively rare in cultivation. Plants for a Future provides a preliminary cultivation method for the species. To achieve maximum production, Fragaria orientalis grows best in a sunny location with moist, fertile soil, though it can also tolerate partial shade. It prefers a mulch made of coniferous needles. Plants can grow vigorously and spread through runners, but they pose little invasive threat.
