About Ficedula speculigera (Bonaparte, 1850)

The Atlas pied flycatcher, also called the Atlas flycatcher, has the scientific name Ficedula speculigera. It is a bird species that belongs to the Old World flycatcher family, and it is one of four species of black-and-white flycatchers found in the Western Palearctic. As a breeding species, it is endemic to Northwest Africa. Previously, it was classified as a subspecies of the European pied flycatcher, but a 2001 study by Sætre et al. recommended recognizing it as a separate full species. This bird has large white patches on its wing and forehead. Information on identifying this species is also provided in works by Etherington and Small (2003) and van den Berg et al. (2006).
