Common Name and Classification

Fejervarya multistriata, commonly known as the Hong Kong paddy frog or just the paddy frog, is a species of frog in the Dicroglossidae family.

Confirmed Distribution

It is confirmed to occur in southern China, ranging from Yunnan to Guangdong and Hainan, and is also found in Taiwan.

Expected Distribution Extension

Its known distribution is thought to likely extend further into Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar.

Taxonomic Complexity

The taxonomy of Fejervarya multistriata and its related frog species in China is complex and not yet fully resolved.

Reclassification of Former Fejervarya limnocharis Populations

Populations that were previously classified as Fejervarya limnocharis are now considered to belong to two separate species: the more southerly distributed Fejervarya multistriata, and the more northerly distributed Fejervarya kawamurai.

Publication Identification Confusion

Earlier published accounts that were labeled as Fejervarya limnocharis actually describe either Fejervarya multistriata or Fejervarya kawamurai, and even accounts labeled as Fejervarya multistriata can mistakenly refer to Fejervarya kawamurai, with this confusion persisting in publications as recently as 2011.
