This species has the scientific name Euprepiophis conspicillata (Boie, 1826). Adult individuals of Euprepiophis conspicillata usually measure 70 to 100 cm (2.3 to 3.3 ft) in total length, which includes both the body and the tail. Euprepiophis conspicillata is native to all four main Japanese islands, along with some smaller outlying Japanese islands. Its native range also includes Kunashir Island, a territory whose ownership is disputed between Japan and Russia.
