About Euphydryas desfontainii (Godart, 1819)

This species has a wingspan of 40โ€“45 mm. The original type form, now recognized as a distinct species due to occurring in the same regions as Euphydryas desfontainii iberica, has specific forewing markings. The proximal edge of its forewing submarginal band is very strongly wavy, and the distal margin has small light rings or lunules positioned within dark spear-shaped spots. The submarginal band of this form is almost as wide as that of iberica, and contrasts sharply with the light yellow discal band that lies proximal to it. This light yellow discal band is broadly bordered by deep black. The subspecies baetica Rbr., found in Andalusia, has an exceptionally broad submarginal band. In this form, the band covers the outer third of the forewing and almost the entire outer half of the hindwing.
