About Euphorbia tuberosa L.
Euphorbia tuberosa L. is a highly variable species that grows a tuberous underground caudex. It produces deciduous grey-green leaves, which are often covered in soft, fine hairs. Leaf shape ranges from lanceolate to oblong, and leaves narrow below their stalks. Leaf margins are wavy or crisped, and usually curve upwards. This species is dioecious. Its yellow-green cyathia measure 5mm across, and bloom during winter on short, trailing peduncles that reach 1–5 cm long. This species is indigenous to the western winter-rainfall regions of South Africa, which have dry summers. Its range extends from Namaqualand in the north to Cape Town in the south. In the Little Karoo region, it reaches eastwards as far as the town of Matjiesfontein. In the Overberg region, it occurs around the town of Napier, and extends east as far as the town of Riversdale. It typically grows in rocky or sandy soils in exposed areas of renosterveld, fynbos, or succulent karoo vegetation.
