About Euphorbia ouachitana Mayfield
Euphorbia ouachitana, commonly known as Ouachita spurge, is a flowering plant species that belongs to the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. It is native to eastern North America, and its natural range is limited to the Ouachita and Ozark Mountains, with isolated disjunct populations located further east in the Nashville Basin. Its most common natural habitat is semi-open forests and woodlands, where it usually grows in thin soils that sit over shale or limestone bedrock. Prior to being formally described as a distinct species in 2013, Euphorbia ouachitana was generally classified as the same species as Euphorbia commutata. Key distinguishing features of Euphorbia ouachitana include its annual growth habit, fused dichasial bracts, and red-brown seeds that have pits arranged in rows. It is an annual herb that grows to a height between approximately 12 and 28 centimeters. It produces flowers and fruits during the spring season.
