About Euphorbia antiquorum L.
Euphorbia antiquorum L., commonly called antique spurge or "Euphorbia of the Ancients", is a succulent plant species belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae. It is widespread across peninsular India, though its exact wild origin remains unclear. It is widely cultivated, and has escaped cultivation to become naturalized, in neighboring regions including Burma, China, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Thailand, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam, as well as in many tropical areas around the world. According to the Samarāṅgaṇa Sūtradhāra, a Sanskrit treatise focused on Śilpaśāstra, the Hindu science of art and construction, the juice of this plant is a potent ingredient used in wall plaster mixtures. This species serves as the type species of the genus Euphorbia. Like most other succulent members of the genus Euphorbia, trade in Euphorbia antiquorum is regulated under Appendix II of CITES.
