About Euphonia xanthogaster Sundevall, 1834
The orange-bellied euphonia, with the scientific name Euphonia xanthogaster Sundevall, 1834, is a bird species belonging to the finch family Fringillidae. It was formerly classified as a tanager in the family Thraupidae. This species can be found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest. The taxon previously known as black-throated euphonia, "Euphonia vittata", is currently considered a hybrid between the orange-bellied euphonia and the chestnut-bellied euphonia. Eleven subspecies of Euphonia xanthogaster are currently recognized: Euphonia xanthogaster oressinoma Olson, 1981, distributed in northwest Colombia; Euphonia xanthogaster chocoensis Hellmayr, 1911, distributed from east Panama to northwest Ecuador; Euphonia xanthogaster badissima Olson, 1981, distributed in north Colombia and northwest Venezuela; Euphonia xanthogaster quitensis (Nelson, 1912), distributed in west Ecuador and northwest Peru; Euphonia xanthogaster dilutior (Zimmer, JT, 1943), distributed in southeast Colombia and northeast Peru; Euphonia xanthogaster cyanonota Parkes, 1969, distributed in west and central Brazil; Euphonia xanthogaster brunneifrons Chapman, 1901, distributed in southeast Peru; Euphonia xanthogaster ruficeps d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837, distributed in west Bolivia; Euphonia xanthogaster brevirostris Bonaparte, 1851, distributed from east Colombia to south Venezuela, the Guianas, northwest Brazil and east Peru; Euphonia xanthogaster exsul Berlepsch, 1912, distributed in northeast Colombia and north Venezuela; and Euphonia xanthogaster xanthogaster Sundevall, 1834, distributed in east Brazil.
