About Eupatorium godfreyanum Cronquist
Eupatorium godfreyanum Cronquist, commonly known as Godfrey’s thoroughwort, is a North American plant species belonging to the Asteraceae family. It occurs in the east-central United States, with its main range extending from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. A small number of isolated populations also grow west of the Appalachians in Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Chromosomal analysis indicates that this species originated as a hybrid between Eupatorium rotundifolium and Eupatorium sessilifolium. Unlike many hybrids, Eupatorium godfreyanum is capable of reproducing independently, and can even be found growing in regions where neither of its parent species occurs. For these reasons, it is recognized as a fully distinct species. Eupatorium godfreyanum is a tall perennial herb that sometimes grows over 90 cm (3 feet) in height. It produces opposite leaves that are either lance-shaped or egg-shaped. It bears flat-topped clusters containing many tiny flower heads. Each flower head contains 4 to 5 white disc florets, and produces no ray florets.
