About Eugenia punicifolia (Kunth) DC.
Eugenia punicifolia (Kunth) DC. is a heavily branched shrub or small tree that grows primarily in the wet tropical biome. This species is one of the most common and widely distributed members of the Myrtaceae family in South America, and can be found across a range of habitats in both Cuba and South America. Mature individuals can reach a maximum height of 8 meters. Its leaves are elliptic or obovoid, with dimensions ranging from 2 to 10 cm long by 1 to 6.5 cm wide. The species produces fragrant white flowers between June and March. Its fruits are edible, with glossy, scarlet red skin. These fruits have a sweet, but slightly astringent, flavor. Eugenia punicifolia fruits are eaten fresh, or processed to make juices, ice creams, and jellies. In traditional medicine, the plant’s leaves and bark are used to treat wounds, diabetes, and fevers. Research has confirmed that this plant has anti-inflammatory, gastroprotective, pain-relieving, blood sugar-lowering, blood pressure-reducing, antioxidant, and antifungal properties.
