Eugenia involucrata DC., commonly called the Cherry of the Rio Grande, is an evergreen shrub native to multiple regions of South America that produces small, dark red to purple fruits with a sweet, cherry-like flavor. Mature plants of this species are hardy down to 20 °F, which equals −7 °C, while younger plants require protection from frosts. The native range of Eugenia involucrata includes all major regions of Brazil: northeastern, southern, southeastern, and west-central Brazil. It also grows natively in northeastern Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. This shrub can live in a wide variety of habitats, including savanna, grassland, both humid and dry forests, and inland rocky areas such as cliffs and mountain peaks.
