About Eudocima materna (Linnaeus, 1767)

The wingspan of Eudocima materna is approximately 60–96 mm. The palpi have a long third joint that is spatulate at its tip. Both sexes have forewings with crenulate cilia. Males have a greenish-grey head and thorax, and an orange abdomen. Their forewings are greenish grey, marked with very numerous faint, striated reddish lines. Three rufous spots are visible at the end of the cell, and a dark oblique line runs from near the apex to the centre of the inner margin. A silvery patch is present on vein 1, and another silvery patch lies below the lower angle of the cell. A marginal black band with a crenulate inner edge runs along the margin, accompanied by a series of white cilia spots. The ventral side is orange. On the ventral forewings, the costa and apical area are blotched with rufous, and an oblique postmedial black band and a sub-apical black band are visible. On the ventral hindwings, the apical area is blotched with rufous, a black spot is found on the costa, and another black spot lies beyond the lower angle of the cell. A marginal black band runs from vein 5 to the anal angle. Females have forewings that are much more prominently striated with rufous colour. Their silvery patches located below and beyond the cell are very large and conjoined, and are crossed by white streaks above vein 2 and beyond the cell. In terms of ecology, the larvae of Eudocima materna feed on species in the family Menispermaceae, including Tinospora smilacina and Legnephora moorei.
