About Euchrysops barkeri (Trimen, 1893)

This species is Euchrysops barkeri, originally described by Trimen in 1893. Males have a wingspan of 26–32 mm, while females have a wingspan of 27–33 mm. Adult Euchrysops barkeri are active year-round, but they are most abundant between November and July in South Africa. The species occurs across South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and the region from Sierra Leone to Tanzania. Within South Africa, it is distributed from East Cape along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, and also in Limpopo province. For its life cycle, females lay eggs on the stems of Sphenostylis angustifolia, a plant in the legume family Fabaceae. The eggs are pale sky-blue and carry a sparkling pearlescent sheen. Larvae feed on plants from the genera Crotalaria and Rhynchosia, as well as the species Vigna unguiculata.
