This species was first described by Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville in 1832. Its known distribution includes the Comoros, the Seychelles, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, and more recently, some parts of Nigeria.
