About Euchalcia variabilis (Piller & Mitterpacher, 1783)
Euchalcia variabilis has a wingspan ranging from 34 to 42 mm. On the upperside of its forewings, the basal area is marked with rosy coloration, and the transversal lines are also bordered in rosy. The central area of the forewing is dark brown, while the dark basal line is either slightly curved or nearly straight. The larvae of this species are green with black heads, numerous blackish dots, a dark stripe along the back, and a yellow lateral line. This species closely resembles Euchalcia bellieri, but it is noticeably larger. Adult moths fly between June and August, with the exact timing varying by location. Larvae feed from May to July on larkspur (Delphinium species), meadow-rue (Thalictrum species), and monkshood (Aconitum species). This species inhabits woodlands, glades, and mountain forests, with a distribution ranging across Central and Southern Europe, through the Southern Ural Mountains, and north to Mongolia.
