About Eucalyptus cloeziana F.Muell.

Eucalyptus cloeziana, commonly called Gympie messmate, is a species of tree. It typically reaches a height of 55 meters (180 feet) when growing in forest, but usually only grows to between 10 and 25 meters (33 to 82 feet) in woodland. Its trunk is covered in thick, rough, fibrous to flaky bark that ranges in color from brownish to grey, while its branches have smooth grey to orange bark. Leaves on young plants and coppice regrowth are egg-shaped, measuring 45 to 100 mm (1.8 to 3.9 in) long and 20 to 50 mm (0.79 to 1.97 in) wide, with the underside of the leaf a lighter shade of green than the upper surface. Adult leaves are lance-shaped to curved, 60 to 145 mm (2.4 to 5.7 in) long and 9 to 32 mm (0.35 to 1.26 in) wide, borne on an 8 to 22 mm (0.31 to 0.87 in) long petiole. Adult leaves are dull green, with the lower surface being a much lighter shade than the upper surface. Flower buds are arranged in leaf axils on a branching inflorescence. Each branch of the inflorescence holds seven buds, attached to a 2 to 13 mm (0.079 to 0.512 in) long peduncle, with individual buds borne on a 1 to 5 mm (0.039 to 0.197 in) long pedicel. Mature buds are spherical to oval, 4 to 6 mm (0.16 to 0.24 in) long and 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 in) wide, with a conical to rounded operculum. Flowering occurs in December and January, and the flowers are white. The fruit is a woody, hemispherical capsule 4 to 7 mm (0.16 to 0.28 in) long and 6 to 11 mm (0.24 to 0.43 in) wide. This tree has a widespread but scattered distribution in Queensland, specifically from east of Tambo to Mundubbera and Gympie, and from west of Townsville to north-west of Cooktown, with isolated populations found in the areas between these two regions. It grows in open forest and woodland on tablelands and slopes, and is often the dominant tree species in these locations.
