About Eschscholzia lobbii Greene
Eschscholzia lobbii is a poppy species commonly known by the common name frying pans. This species is endemic to California, growing in the Central Valley and the adjacent foothills of the Sierra Nevada. It is a small annual herb that grows from a cluster of segmented leaves, which have pointed leaflets. It produces erect stalks that reach up to 15 centimeters in height, with each stalk bearing a single poppy flower. Its petals are around one centimeter long, and range in color from bright yellow to a muted orange. The fruit of Eschscholzia lobbii is a capsule 3 to 7 centimeters long, which holds tiny brown seeds. Frying pans are commonly found growing near vernal pools. The species is named for William Lobb (1809–1864), an English plant collector.
