About Erythronium californicum Purdy

Erythronium californicum Purdy is a hardy herbaceous perennial that grows from a pointed bulb 3 to 6 centimeters wide. It produces two basal leaves, which are sometimes spotted with brown. Its reddish-green stalks can grow up to 30 cm (12 inches) tall, and each stalk bears one to three nodding, slightly scented flowers in spring. The flowers have yellowish-white tepals that are 2 to 4 cm long; tepals sometimes have red or brown banding or striping near their bases. The stamens, anthers, and stigma of this species are whitish. Two cultivars of Erythronium californicum Purdy — 'Brocklamont Inheritance' and 'White Beauty' — have earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
