About Erythrochiton gymnanthus Kallunki
Erythrochiton gymnanthus Kallunki grows to a height between 1.5 and 6 metres. Its young branches are glabrous, and each branch bears a tuft of leaves. The alternate, unifoliate leaves are 14.5 to 36.4 centimetres long and 3.5 to 11 centimetres wide. The leaves are shaped obovate or oblanceolate, and sometimes narrowly oblanceolate. At their base, leaves are cuneate and decurrent. The adaxial surface of the 0.5 to 3 cm petiole is smooth. This species produces white flowers, with corollas measuring 4.5 to 6 centimetres in diameter. Its fruit is a capsule formed by 4 to 5 glabrous carpels that measure 1.6 to 1.9 cm. It flowers from April to July. Erythrochiton gymnanthus is endemic to the Central Pacific Conservation Area of Costa Rica, specifically found in the Barranca and Miramar regions and within Carara National Park. It grows primarily in humid forests at elevations between 20 and 100 metres.
