About Erysimum menziesii (Benth. & Hook.f.) Wettst.
Erysimum menziesii is a short biennial or perennial herb in the mustard family, usually reaching a maximum height no greater than 15 centimeters. Its leaves grow straight and elongated along the stem; basal leaves are often thicker, hairier, and lobed in shape. The top of the stem holds a dense cluster of flowers with bright yellow, rounded petals. After the flowers drop, the plant produces very long, straight-out silique fruits. This species shows variable appearance, especially across its different subspecies. At least one subspecies is pollinated by the bee Emphoropsis miserabilis, which also faces conservation threats. The plant has high reproductive output (high fecundity), but extremely low seedling survival: over 98% of seedlings die within their first year. At least one subspecies is commonly infected by the white rust fungus Albugo canadensis.
