About Erynnis tristis (Boisduval, 1852)

Erynnis tristis, commonly called the mournful duskywing, is a species of spread-wing skipper belonging to the butterfly family Hesperiidae. This species can be found across Central America, North America, and South America. Individuals are mottled brown, with a distinctive white fringe on the hind wings. Mournful duskywings look very similar to the closely related funereal duskywing, but mournful duskywings are more commonly found in urban areas. The caterpillar larvae of this species feed on young oak trees, while adult butterflies feed on nectar from a wide range of both wild and garden flowers.
