About Erynnis lucilius (Scudder & Burgess, 1870)

Erynnis lucilius, commonly known as the columbine duskywing, is a species of butterfly belonging to the family Hesperiidae, the skipper family. It is classified as a skipper because its flight pattern has a characteristic skipping motion. This species is distributed in North America, ranging from southern Quebec to Manitoba in the north, and extending south into the northeastern United States. The wingspan of Erynnis lucilius measures 21–29 mm (0.83–1.14 in). In the eastern portion of its range, this species has two generations per year, with active flight occurring from early May to mid-June. Columbine duskywings occupy habitats that include ravines and gullies. They are most commonly found in rocky deciduous woodland forests, and they prefer shaded natural areas for resting, where there is an abundance of leafy plants for feeding.
