About Erynnis icelus (Scudder & Burgess, 1870)

Erynnis icelus, commonly called the dreamy duskywing or aspen dusky wing, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Hesperiidae. This species is native to boreal North America. Its wingspan measures between 29 and 38 mm. In most of its range, Erynnis icelus produces one generation per year, with adult butterflies active on the wing from April to early July. A rare second generation may occur in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Full-grown larvae are pale green and marked with numerous small white dots. The insect's heart appears as a green stripe running along the middle of the larva's back. Larvae of this species feed on plants from the Salix, Populus, and occasionally Betula genera. Adult Erynnis icelus feed on nectar gathered from the flowers of blueberry, wild strawberry, blackberry, Labrador tea, dogbane, New Jersey tea, winter cress, purple vetch, and lupine.
